Environmental taxes are part of the strategies to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The objective of this documentary research is to explore the application of environmental taxes in Mexico based on a review of recent literature on environmental taxes in various regions and countries. To this end, a retrospective was carried out on the thinking of sustainable development, a review in the Scopus database, of the concepts "environmental taxes" and "green taxes", and a review of the application of said taxes in Mexico. It is concluded that environmental taxes are an alternative to reduce pollution levels; however, the proper application of the income obtained in mitigation and adaptation measures is necessary.
