Abstract

The diversification of the energy matrix is a commitment that Mexico acquired in front of the international community to mitigate climate change, however, the achievements made in Mexico are insufficient, due to the failed strategies of the Mexican energy model, such as the pressure for inputs for the production of electricity. On the one hand, this research analyzes the impact of the energy reform on the levels of oil and gas extraction in Mexico. For this, two econometric models were used; one generating an alternative dichotomous variable to the Chow test and the other applying the Wald test to determine the existence of a structural change. And, on the other hand, strategies in the energy and electricity sector in Mexico have been studied using a semi-log Log-Lin model, with monthly data from January 1993 to January 2021, identifying and explaining flaws in these strategies. After analyzing the situation of both oil and gas extraction, as well as the electricity sector in Mexico from a historical perspective, it is clear that this sector has been in crisis for several years and Mexico needs to develop a self-sufficient, profitable, and ecological energy industry.
